.:HONORIFICS:.

How you address someone in Japan is very important. You should always be aware of the situation and whether or not you are speaking to others with respect.

Common honorifics used in Japanese:

-san - the Japanese equivalent to Mr./Mrs.; polite

-chan - usually used for young girls

-kun - usually used for young boys

-senpai - used for an upperclassman

-kohai - used for an underclassman

-sensei - used for a teacher or instructor (-hakase and -kyoju may be used for a doctor or professor)

-sama - means lord/lady

-dono - means lord/lady

[no honorific] - in Japan when someone asks you to call them by their first name, this can be an indication that you are very close, however, if you call someone by name without an honorific, it can also be an insult, so make sure you are allowed to do so (for example, Ichigo calls Ryou "Shirogane", which could be taken as rude.)
